Medieval Agricultural Revolution, Essay Example

One of the most significant technological innovations that contributed to the medieval agricultural revolution was the heavy plow, which enabled the clay soil that was present in much of Northern Europe to be prepared for farming more readily (Levack et al., 2001). The hoe and the harrow were also developed; the harrow was utilized to smooth soil out more quickly than conventional hand farming methods. The hoe had a variety of practical uses including harvesting crops, removing weeds, and shaping the soil. Furthermore the horse collar was used to help distribute weight across the horse, allowing it to carry heavier loads. The tandem harness allowed for better control over the horse, while horseshoes allowed horses to travel further distances. Last, three-field crop rotation was used to take more significant advantage over farmland, allowing the same soil to be utilized for different crops during different seasons.

The agricultural revolution contributed to the development of manors and cities because this new farming technology allowed for the faster growth of food with a greater yield. As a consequence, a smaller number of farmers became able to support a larger population. Prior to this technological revolution, most families grew their own food. However, the advent of new technology encouraged many people to leave their own farms are travel to live and work in cities where food was still plentiful. This was a particularly attractive move for individuals that wished to avoid working jobs that were considered laborious and to peruse trades instead. As this shift to city life continued, more innovations were created to make this lifestyle even easier. However, the most beneficial technologies to this pilgrimage were those that would help support large populations within a small area.
