Essay

In the article “Meet the Man Leading the Connected-Home Revolution” (Pullen), the author features an inventor and entrepreneur who invested years of research into a product that was finally supported by one of the largest investors: Google. Indeed, the strengths of the article include the details depicting the struggle for space, investment, and ideas, as well as the unusual determination of Palo Alto, who worked for many years for Apple and learned what makes a business successful. Among the strengths of the business, there are several that people in today’s business need to consider. First of all; the author took a step back from the industry and the product idea. They did not become followers of market trends, but creators of new approaches. This was the main reason why Matt Rogers was able to get the Learning Thermostat to become the best selling product on the market. The inventors and product development team did not simply look at the market and analyze competition: they approached the problem from a new angle: taking away the need of having to program the thermostat, along with smart features resulted in a product that stood out from the competition’s thermostats. The decision that the creators made to provide software updates for customers for free was a clever idea, and made the product look more appealing, different, and valuable for homeowners. It is clear that the Apple affect did influence the decision, and the focus on customer service, satisfaction was a huge driver in the Learning Thermostat’s success. The most important message of the article for me is that having a good idea is not enough to creating a successful business: Fadell researched the market, similar products, explored distribution channels, and the feasibility of the idea.
