I. Introduction

  • Music in the past had been male dominated since musicians had to perfect the art of playing different musical instruments; a task thought to have been achievable by exclusively men
  • Mendoza, a woman managed to venture into this male dominated industry having learnt to sing and play stringed instrument

II. Body

  • Mendoza realized her talent at a tender age
  1. Mendoza’s influence dates back to her childhood when her talent called in and she started collecting materials that would guide her through to her future career.
  2. She used to collect musical lyrics found on chewing gum wrappings up until she was able to make her own lyrics with full production
  • like other songwriters, she had her influences on the normal social life.
  1. Mendoza as a song writer had her influence on the people especially trying to bridge the gap between a man’s and a woman career. Her songs created awareness about the history of her country Mexico as it would be related to America
  • Her Struggles and Achievements
  1. It was not easy to venture in an industry that was dominated by men, and when    this later turned as an influence and motivation to all women who possessed such talent, hers was a big struggle to fight such dominion.
  2. She married a shoemaker to the astonishment of many who have expected her to marry a man of a different career. And still, the man she married tried to pressurize her out of the musical career, something she fought passionately.
  3. In line with the musical career, Mendoza in her love for history wrote a book Lydia Mendoza: an autobiography. It is in that book that she recalls how hard it had been venturing into music primarily dominated by men. But then she noted how her persistence yielded the admiration by many others who saw her as an icon and in that gathered the courage to pursue their talent.

III. Conclusion

  • Mendoza is a reflection of a person trying to fight a wayward tradition. Her fights are full of determination and as such, her success becomes an inspiration to many who were influenced by her way of life.
  • Her songs are full of the admiration of the history of her people especially the Mexican-American people, her country. This gives the people the yearning of the admiration of their history and that of the country.
