Essay

Patience is one of the key factors that individuals must have in the field of nursing. It is a field where you have the opportunity to meet many people who are ill and injured. It is also a field where you experience sadness as well as happiness. It may also include long hours and weekends. However, it is one of the most rewarding fields that a person could have. Giving back, healing, making the sick smile and listening are what are known to changing people’s circumstances.

I would want to find out about the various pathways to becoming a nurse, and researching how long it would take to obtain a degree in the field of nursing. Also searching the earnings, job outlook for the future and what it’s like in nursing school from the application process to the graduation process and landing on a nursing career. Another very important issue was to find out what my strengths, weaknesses and skills are and whether I qualify for the nursing program.

After the interview with the nurses at Blodgett hospital, they both stated that I will get a better idea of what nursing program consists of through research and the experience of assessments as I pursue this interest.

The interview started off with two nurses letting me interview them at the beginning of their shift, while my cousin was in the hospital.  Each session was approximately 20 minutes to a half-hour after the start of seconded shift.  The first thing that this student decided was to check at the front desk to make sure that both nurses were still available for the interview and to find out if they were going to be on time. It was a reminder in case they had forgotten about the interview.

During the interview both nurses stated that they loved their jobs, and one of the most important things about working as a nurse is to have a sense of humor. This student made sure he was prepared, had a notebook and open were at hand. He thought about the questions that were going to be asked, such as Ask open-ended question, for example “Tell me about nursing school,” or “Explain how they were feeling about their job.”  After the interview was over an expression of gratitude was given, and a request for an address to send a thank you card in which they both stated to just address it the Blodgett Hospital floor 3East.

One of the things I learnt is that to be a nurse you have to be caring.  Nurses base their career on helping and taking care of people.  The field of nursing has many fields to go into such as home health, case management, business development (marketing), psych unit, school nurse, head start health consultant, including the legal field assisting lawyers with injury cases. It will take approximately 4 years at least to earn a bachelors degree. However I’ve learned that no matter what type of nursing program you decide to go into, you will have to learnthe basics of nursing practice and ”and complete assessments of the patient” (RN, Katie, and Interview, on May 7, 2011)

The job outlook in the nursing field appears to be very promising. To become a register nurseeducation and training should include a high school diploma, on the job training, work experience, internships and state licensure. The field of nursing teaches patients that they can manage their own illnesses by changing their mind set and eating habits just my making some minor changes in their lives and incorporating diet, nutrition, and exercise into a program.  RNs also might run general health screening or immunization clinics, blood drives, and public seminars on various conditions.

Nursing is both sad and a rewarding career. “Patients can also be difficult” (Amanda) and rude especially those with long term diagnoses.  However you must learn to be compassionate to patients even when they are not to you.  “However the most important thing learned through this interview was that you must able to critically think”,( www.criticalthinking.org) and have patience, the environment can instantly become chaotic. It is very important that that you learn to adapted under presser and maintain self control. The average nurses wages is approximately $62,450 per year and one of the most stable jobs in the united states.
