Mind Over Mass Media, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 279

Essay

Just as traditional mass media such as the newspapers, televisions, paperbacks and printing press caused threats to the brainpower of consumers, now it is the turn of electronic technologies. Bullet points have been replaced with PowerPoint while the use of search engines facilitates shallow skimming of knowledge instead of detailed information gathering. Science demanded high echelons of brainwork with evaluations based on discovery benchmarks. However, for conventional scientists, they are always at their emails and learning is conducted by PowerPoint thus transforming the brain of humans. Electronic media has been associated with threat to intelligence thus causing a down plunge of science. Experience has been linked to brain transformation. However, experience has no potentials of revamping the capacities for information processing mechanisms but the impact of experience is only specific to experience itself. If a person is trained to perform a particular role, then the individual becomes an expert at that particular activity but nothing else. Therefore, consumption of electronic media would most likely change the brain to informational equivalent.

The information technology is therefore responsible for dynamic transformation in the human brain. People have been addicted to information technology and self control strategies are needed to limit the extent of distraction. It is therefore prudent to turn off the twitter account or email at times and rely on the brain to accomplish some tasks. This will in turn encourage intellectual growth.

The rise in information technology in social media is responsible for the exponential increase in knowledge and the human brainpower. Information technology is playing crucial role in the collection, retrieval, and management of collective intellectual output of individuals at diverse scales including twitter, e-book previews and internet based encyclopedias.
