Child’s Strengths, Preferences and Interests:

John seems to be interested in making friends, but is angered easily. He typically interprets what seems to be friendly interactions from other students as a personal attack and responds negatively according to this belief. As a result John is regularly disengaged and distracted from his school work. John has been improving in terms of these interactions by reducing the severity of the actions he is taking. While he will overreact in some cases, in many he will become angry and eventually ignore the situation or attempt to work it out. When John is very irritated, he continues to lose control and throw objects, although these occurrences have been reduced.

Impact of Disability and Child Needs

John’s EMD distracts his ability to perform well in his school work. When John is alone with a paraprofessional, he is able to complete math and reading assignments at a satisfactory level. When he is present in a classroom, he feels that he is being ridiculed and is quick to defend himself. It is recommended that John take tests and complete important assignments in a separate room to ensure that he is able to remain focused.
