Topic #1: Breastfeeding Birthplan (Hospital and Home)
Objectives: By the end of the session, the student will be able to: 1) list at least two possible strategies for breastfeeding after birth while in the hospital; and 2) list at least two strategies for breastfeeding in the home environment.
Rationale: When a client understands and recognizes the benefits of a practical and feasible breastfeeding plan for the hospital and for at home, her child will be provided with the best possible opportunities for feeding that will translate into positive nutritional habits and outcomes. While in the hospital, this plan provides a means of enabling mothers to become accustomed to breastfeeding while under a nurse’s care, and it also enables the mother to begin her recovery process after birth and to recognize the physical symptoms related to breastfeeding that often occur (Breastfeedingpartners.org, 2015).
Learning Strategies/Teacher/Learner Activities: For this lesson plan, the instructor will engage clients in smaller groups of two or three students in order to demonstrate the importance of developing a breastfeeding plan for the hospital and for at home with the guidance and direction of the nurse. These activities will stimulate discussion that requires students to consider how to address a routine breastfeeding schedule that will work effectively for both mother and child. After the smaller discussions have taken place, the group will reconvene and discuss their findings with the instructor.
Materials Needed: For this lesson plan, pens and paper will be used by students to write down their ideas when they are in smaller groups. Then, in the larger group discussion, the instructor will use a white board and dry erase marker to write down he possible breastfeeding plans that are likely to occur and some of the challenges related to these plans that may transpire for mothers and their children.
Topic #2: Common Concerns (Sore Nipples, Engagement, Jaundice)
Objectives: By the end of the session, the student will be able to 1) Identify at least three physical symptoms of breastfeeding; 2) Identify at least two complications associated with breastfeeding; and 3) Identify at least two concerns related to breastfeeding that mothers might experience at home.
Rationale: When a client understands the possible symptoms associated with breastfeeding, she will recognize how to minimize these symptoms and how to fully address them in the context of her own recovery after birth. Most importantly, mothers should not be alarmed as they experience some of the common symptoms of breastfeeding, such as sore nipples, possible jaundice, and lack of engagement, as these reflect a period of adjustment that requires the mother to exercise patience and a discovery of her own strengths and limitations on the road to recovery (Womenshealth.gov, 2015). When problems occur that go beyond the normal symptoms, the mother should engage the support of a nurse or a lactation specialist to determine the root cause of these problems and how to best overcome them with an effective strategy in place (Womenshealth.gov, 2015).
Learning Strategies/Teacher/Learner Activities: For this lesson plan, the instructor will engage clients in small groups to discuss this lesson and will ask the entire group to reconvene to discuss their findings. This will also enable the instructor to identify areas where additional knowledge and education are required to support a viable strategy for managing symptoms as they occur.
Materials Needed: For this lesson plan, pens, paper, a white board, and a dry erase marker will be used to list the possible symptoms or complications associated with breastfeeding that occur with both new and experienced mothers, and signs to look for as new mothers become adjusted to this process.
