Introduction
Many hair product companies wish to generate products that could help extend hair length, as many consumers wish to find a quick fix to make their hair more fashionable (Bradley, 2015). A product that would double hair length in a six week period of time would be highly marketable and profitable. The hypothesis of this study is that the newly created product will help double hair length during a six week period compared to hair products already on the market.
Research Questions
1) How long will it take for product X to double the hair lengths of users?
2) Will product X allow for more efficient hair growth compared to other hair products?
Method
To test whether product X will be able to double the hair lengths of users six weeks after use, it will be necessary to generate a random sample of participants that are willing to try the product. Therefore, participants will be recruited in front of a hair accessories store at a local mall. They will be approached by the research team and asked if they are trying to grow their hair. If these individuals are interested, they will be informed that we are conducting research to determine if our new hair product will double the length of hair within six weeks. Participants that agree to the study will be provided with a six week supply of product X or an alternative hair product that is already on the market, at random to assess whether there is a placebo effect. The first participant will be provided with product X and the following individual will be provided with the placebo; following participants will be provided with the hair products in this manner until 10 participants have been given product X and 10 participants have been given the placebo.
After the hair product has been handed out, the researchers will measure the length of each participant’s hair. They will then set up a meeting with each individual in six weeks to reassess hair length. At the time of the reexamination, participants will be asked whether they used the product that was assigned to them consistently or whether they got a haircut. At the end of this follow-up period, the collected data will be analyzed.
Data Analysis Techniques
The difference between hair length at the beginning of the study and at the end of the study will be calculated for both the group that received product X and the group that received the placebo. These numbers will then be averaged together separately for each group to determine the average growth that occurred for each. These two values will then be compared; if the hypothesis is correct, it is expected that the average length of hair of the individuals using product X will be approximately double of that measured in the group using the placebo. These values will be calculated both including and excluding values from individuals that either reported that they did not use the shampoo regularly or reported that they got a haircut during the trial period.
Expected Conclusions and Implications
It is expected that product X will successfully double the length of participants’ hair in a six week period. This indicates that this specialized formula will be effective for increasing the hair length of a majority of individuals that use it. Even if product X does not double the length of the hair, any growth seen is indicative of its efficacy as a hair growth product. Therefore, it is likely that the product would be profitable and many hair product stores would be willing to sell it. While the study should be repeated using a larger amount of participants, this is enough information to validate the accuracy of the hypothesis and convince businessmen to purchase the product to sell in their stores.
