The 21st century business is developed for minimal costs, maximized output and optimal customer satisfaction. In order to achieve this, businesses have found it necessary to employ an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, and integrate it within its functions and operations. However, with the growing number of ERP systems available in the market, businesses have to be able to identify the most ideal ERP system.
ERP systems are usually developed and designed for use in specific industries. However, there are some ERP systems that are made for general market use. Companies have to take into consideration a number of issues before selecting an ERP system. The functionality that comes with the ERP systems is a crucial aspect to consider. An ERP system will only be as good as the usefulness of its functions to the business.
There are three ER systems that are particularly popular in the market; (1) Sage ERP X3, (2) SAP and (3) OpenERP. Of the three, OpenERP is open sources while the other two are proprietary ERP systems. A detailed comparison is provided in the table below;
Sage is a robust on-premise ERP system that has been specifically tailored for the real estate and construction industries. Sage is best suited for medium-sized to large companies. The most significant feature is the robust project management module. OpenERP is currently a popular open source ERP software that is unique and stands out from its competition. The software is characterized by a complete set of modules that have most of critical ERP functions without having the hustle of purchasing licenses for individual modules. Before selecting an ERP software package, it is important to understand the different features and modules the ERP system offers, as well as the risks and challenges associated with the software.
