Bendar, Bryan. Islamic leader says US officials unfairly target Muslims. 18 February 2015. Web. 17 May 2015.
Many individuals are becoming concerned about how the government is targeting Muslims. Muslim individuals are more likely to get stopped on the streets or public transportation systems for random searches than individuals of any other ethnic background. This demonstrates that post-9/11 mentality has created a sensation of racism against these individuals, who are being treated unfairly, as none of these individuals are typically involved in terrorist plots. Many Muslims and non-Muslim allies are protesting against this treatment because it is a form of discrimination and it is important for Americans to understand that American Muslims are not a part of these terror attacks.
Duyvesteyn, I. How New Is the New Terrorism? Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, 27.5(2004): 439-454.
This author claims that “new terrorism” is a false idea, as the terrorism that we are dealing with today is exactly the same as the type of terrorism that societies have been facing over a long period of time. Ultimately, the political motivation of terrorists have remained the same, as have the ways that they intend to carry out these acts. Therefore, it would be unreasonable to claim that the terrorism that led to the September 11th terrorist attacks was somehow different than the terrorism that came before it.
Earle, G. Obama refuses to acknowledge ‘Muslim terrorists’ at summit. 18 February 2015. Web. 17 May 2015.
President Obama is attempting to combat the feelings of racism against Muslims and Arabs by refusing to use the term “Muslim terrorists”. He claims that we cannot hold a group of people responsible for terrorist acts, as all peoples are capable of this. Critics believe that Obama should use this term because it is the appropriate descriptor of the violence that is currently occurring in the Middle East.
Laqueur, W. The New Terrorism: Fanaticism and the Arms of Mass Destruction. Oxford University Press, 1999.
This book discusses the terrorist acts that have been happening around the world in addition to those that were happening in the 1990s. This book is an interesting source because it provides a modern take on terrorism at a time immediately before the September 11th terrorist attacks. It demonstrates that the sentiment felt towards terrorism was always the same, but people have taken on a more frightened view of terrorism following the attacks, and it is this fear that is causing detriment in our society.
Morgan, MJ. The Origins of the New Terrorism. January 2004. Web. 19 May 2015.
The author claims that the changing perception of terrorism has been due to societal changes, not the actual change of terrorism. On the other hand, there has been some change in the organization of terrorists due to these societal structures. Since they are gaining less support from their governments, they have needed to take more independent actions in order to achieve their goals. As such, these groups have attempted to come to power on their own, and these attempts have been successful with groups like ISIS.
Norton, Ben. Right-Wing Terrorist Arrested for Planning to Massacre NY Muslim Community. 16 May 2015. Web. 17 May 2015.
In the post-9/11 world, there is much concern about individuals committing terrorism. However, many individuals are also committing heinous acts against individuals they suspect to be terrorists. Recently, Robert Doggart, a right wing extremist attempted to wipe out an entire New York Muslim community. Reports claim that he was willing to use guns and rifles to kill the residents. This demonstrates that the 9/11 attacks have created a sensation of racism against Muslims that encourages people to act as terrorists in an attempt to wipe out terrorism.
Spencer, Alexander. Questioning the Concept of ‘New Terrorism’. In: Peace, Conflict and Development, 8(2006): 1-33.
This article argues that the idea of new terrorism does exist because the people involved in terrorist attacks in addition to their motivations for doing so have changed significantly. While modern terrorism could be described in the context of trends that came before terrorism in this era, the author argues that there are many components of modern terrorist acts that make it new. The changing political climate necessitates that terrorists adapt to the new times.
Tucker, D. What is New about the New Terrorism and How Dangerous is It? Terrorism and Political Violence, 13.3(2001): 1-14.
This article was written immediately following the September 11th attacks and describes the overall reaction that the American people had towards these attacks. This was an interesting phenomenon because while everyone acted brave in the face of terrorism in the beginning and stood together, this situation quickly turned into a blame game in which the government and individuals would target people in the Middle East in addition to American Arabs to direct blame. New terrorism is essentially a new interpretation of an old idea, and it is important to understand these connections in order to gain a true understanding of terrorism in society.
