The act on Newsies based on Disney’s show of the same title appeals to be one of the best productions shown to the public making it possible for the act to garner several awards. Directed by Jeff Calhoun of the Big River Revival production, the act was specifically directed to give attention o the life of Jack Kelly who is a charismatic newsboy who served as the leader of the group of youngsters he worked with. He is presented to be a young man who desired nothing but a better life for those who like him have realized a distinct hardship in life. Choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, the transition of the dances according to the musical scoring used in the play affected the major reaction of the audience towards the said artistic presentation.
Given the issue that it specifically addresses, the play is indeed extremely relative and relatable for the target audience. Inspired by the true story on the occurs of the Newsboy Strike of 1899, the choreographer and the director work together to make a distinct presentation of the facts in the past and make the approaches more modern through musical scoring and lighting options used throughout the entire play.
Since the play has been presented in several theaters over time, it could be observed how the repetitive musical scoring is able to create a distinct impact on what the audiences expect from the presentations. However, to meet up with the demands of the modern society and the audience the producers want to serve, the need to create a new way of enticing the audience into the overall plot of the story was rather necessary. The musical directors then intended to manifest a directive use of new set of musical choices to make the presentation more time-definite and relatively connected to the modern audience.
The choreography also appeals to the new generation of audiences especially that it involves an amalgamation of traditional dancing with the new wave of movements that are necessary in updating the overall play. The choreographers and musical directors made sure that the balance between the movements of the actors and the songs they sing would add up to the overall value of creativity that the play is represented with. One of the reasons why some of the critics of the play actually recognize Newsies as one of Disney’s best produced Broadway musicals.
The actors of the play finely present themselves and live through the characters that they are aiming to portray for the audience. Relatively, the distinct use of lavish props and colorful backdrops even make the presentation more reflective of the message that the story hopes to portray. The script could be considered simplistic; something that made the play much easier to accept and appreciate on the part of the viewers. Valuing how the actors present themselves along with the script specifically gives off a deeper meaning into the play.
Overall the real value of the play in representing the real theme of what life is about for those who face hardships in the society then and now could be identified accordingly through the elements used to increase the interest of the viewers into the story. Bringing the new generation into an almost close to time-travel event, the audiences are given the chance to experience what was evident in the society during the early 1900s and the distinct courses of social problems the society had to deal with especially in relation to poverty and the unequal chances given for people to develop into better lives during the said time; a social scenery still considered common in the modern years at present.
