Essay

Dear people,

It is I, Chief Chipahawak, leader of the Cherokee tribe in my town here in Savannah. I have been writing for a local newspaper for the past five years in peaceful collaboration with some of the white folk in Georgia who have not seemed to mind our presence, but the end seems to be approaching. I have witnessed much since I have come to Georgia- times of peace, times of unrest, times of unknown, this time however, I know in my heart that the white men do not want us Indians on their land any longer.

A year ago we all watched in disbelief as their president Andrew Jackson called for what was known as “The Indian Removal Act.” This act has affected all of us, and no doubt will continue to affect all of us until they have wiped us off the face of their country completely. We have tried to show them that we mean no harm, but their ignorance blinds them from any ability to comprehend a way in which we could all co-exist- in that way, I feel sorry for the white folk. I have watched my Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee-Creek, and Seminole brothers and sisters be uprooted, persecuted and killed. I have watched my fellow brothers be forced out of their homes, told that they needed to move to a new location, only to be lead down a long and lonely trail of tears.

I do not know if you will hear from me again, for this may be my last article writing at this paper. This may be my last day walking down these streets. But to those of you reading this, hold your head high, we are not one, we are many- we are not weak, we are strong.

-Chief Chipahawk
