The recent WSJ article (Rooney) talks about Nokia’s push into Windows mobile operating system for smart phones. The author is puzzled at the reaction of the market which punished the company through stock price depreciation even though Nokia is the first company that has succeeded in making an affordable smart phone with Windows mobile operating system. The analysts have not been very appreciative of the tremendous progress made by Nokia under its new leadership because every move in the smart phone industry is measured against Apple as the benchmark.

The article’s perspective was favorable towards Nokia because the author notes that these affordable versions with Windows mobile operating system may help the company gain significant market share in overseas markets. The author also says that Windows 8 mobile system is expected to be a solid product and if the expectations are met, it will become a competitive alternative to Apple and Google’s Android. The author also believes that Windows 8 will be embraced because users desire seamless integration and Windows 8 has been designed with that in mind.

The article gives us hints that Apple’s dominance has not only affected Blackberry but also Nokia. Even though Nokia has always been a mass marketer but smart phones are gaining tractions which may explain Nokia’s potential troubles. But the article also makes us feel optimistic about Nokia’s future because Nokia’s new leadership is willing to take bold steps and has been taking a long term view. U.S. may be the most lucrative market but the future growth lies in emerging economies and Nokia realizes that which may be why it’s working on affordable smartphone versions as well.
