Oedipus the King, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 430

Essay

The plot of Oedipus the King is a climatic plot. It is filled with drama, tension, and suspense. It makes the viewer or reader wonder what is going on? Who did it? When will he realize what happened? The plot of the play is the Oedipus the prince of Corinth was told that he would do horrible things to his mother and father and he leaves home headed for Thebes where he could start a new life. On the way he comes to a crossroads there is a scuffle and he kills a man. In Thebes there is a plague and they are told that the plague will only end if the murderer of Laius was found. Then Oedipus begins to wonder if he killed Laius at the crossroads. This plot is definitely a climatic plot.

The point of attack in this play is when Creon returns from the Oracle at Delphi with the message that the plague is caused by the murder of the old king, Laius. This is the point that we are starting to lead up to the climax, this is the rise. Here Oedipus declares that the murderer will be exiled, he curses the murderer, his temper begins to come out, Oedipus remembers the killing of the man on the way to Thebes, Oedipus learns that his father the king of Corinth has died and Oedipus needs to be crowned King. At the climax of the play Oedipus learns that he was the murderer of the old king, and that he has slept with his mother. The falling from the climax is when we learn that Oedipus has blinded himself because of the wrong he has done.

The language of this play is high-flown and it makes it a interesting read and allows for the reader or the viewer to stay interested in the play. The music of the play the timing of the play with rise and the climax and the fall is a good pacing. It all happens at a nice speed and is timed to keep the viewer guessing. I see the stage being set up as the outside of a castle with people coming and going into the scene to discuss what is going on. Almost set-up like the courtyard of the palace where the king can talk to his people and discuss what is going on. It may also have a curtain that covers the castle view when they are in an indoor scene, but it would for sure look like the courtyard of the castle with, with the castle in the background.
