Offender Punishment, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 311

Essay

While there are many different methods that could be used to sentence criminals, the best approach to manage criminal offenders is rehabilitation. While incapacitation, deterrence, and retribution are effective in providing punishment to an individual for the crimes that they have committed, rehabilitation is the only method that has been proven to be useful to eventually allow the criminal to return to society. Furthermore individuals who experience rehabilitation programs have a lower likelihood of committing future crimes. Rehabilitation makes these individuals understand the errors of their ways and attempts to reshape their behaviors in a manner that allows them to be welcomed back into the community.

Rehabilitation is successful for many reasons. First, former criminals describe the process as more challenging that typical imprisonment, as these programs have stringent requirements that keep inmates busy most of the day. In addition, individuals who are in these programs are aware that they are working towards a goal of returning to society. Individuals not enrolled in these programs often have no hope of returning to a normal life, but this idea acts as a drive for prisoners in rehabilitation programs. Furthermore, after the program is complete, individuals are released back into society with a support system that is intended to help them reacclimatize to life outside bars. This support system helps keep these individuals in check to ensure that former criminals will not return back to their old behaviors. Typically, job placement and other assistance is provided. The community is incentivized to work with these individuals as well, as there are many local and federal grants available to employers who are willing to place them in a stable work position. Overall, rehabilitation is the best option to reduce crime because it focuses on the reversing the drive and mindset of the criminal rather than simply locking them away.
