Language background: Jessica is a third grade student at Bridge Gate Elementary School. She had trouble answering questions appropriately and has difficulty expressing herself in English language. According to her second grade report, the teacher was concerned that Jessica’s use of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure does not match her age. The teacher reported that her oral reading skills and comprehension skills are slightly above average. In addition, her Math, Science, and Social Studies were also a concern. According to the report, Jessica was having trouble retaining vocabulary in the information text during Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. Furthermore, Jessica was performing below average on measure of passage reading fluency as compared to her classmates. Moreover, the teacher reported that Jessica was having difficulty completing passage compression tasks.

Jessica’s weakness: repeating long sentences, and explaining how words are related.
The observation from the examiner and the language test results revealed that Jessica is below average in terms of language skills. This will affect her educational performance and therefore, she needs special attention from the tutors in order to improve the performance.
