Organizational Background
BCNC is an organization established to support the learning assistance requirements of immigrants to the United States as they enter American classes. As of now, the most populated number of members that the organization serves are low income Chinese families that are trying to survive the challenges of remaining and being accepted fully within a foreign society such as the American community. What makes such operation vital is the fact that most immigrants [specifically from China] face a huge challenge of being culturally shocked as they tend to become fully immersed within the American society’s culture. Notably, the need for the children to attend a foreign class even adds up to the pressures that the youngsters are already facing.
Being in a class with highly diversified population, especially for children, could present a very scary scene. This is why BCNC is intended to provide assistance to such students funding it hard to complete their homework and other school tasks due to their lack of proper command of the English language. Chinese individuals are strongly rooted to their own culture. It is usually because of this fact that children from such nationality become highly shocked to the new system s of learning that the American education system offers. To make sure that these students survive the challenge and that they are given the proper chance to develop as young individuals who are ready to embrace personal improvement, BCNC utilizes its resources and its people to give the children the needed support and the boost of morale that they need to make sure that they are able to grasp every vital point of learning they need to gain from class.
As an organization, the goal of BCNC is strongly rooted and well-defined. Relatively, it is because of this foundation that the officers of the organization are also properly motivated to work towards the said goal. Seeing that the members of the society that the organization serves is vulnerable enough ti require such assistance fuels the enthusiasm of the administrators to find better ways to make sure that the service they provide become a beneficial source of success for the learners as well as that of their families.
Analysis of Organizational Setup
BCNC’s organizational setup is based on the hierarchy of authority that operates behind the machine that is fueled by the motivated members of the group. Composed of educators and social enthusiasts, the administrators of BCNC are properly designated to positions that they are expected to effectively handle. To note, the organization does not rely on one leader alone, but on the collaboration of several leaders established in their own duties. The separation of the organization into smaller departments that would take care of specific roles an distinct goals apart from the main goal is viewed by its leaders as the strongest asset of their group. According to these leaders, having the best minds perform at their best within sectors of operation that they are good at makes up the overall being of the organization thus making it more functional for its stakeholders.
The goal of the organization is no joke at all. The challenges faced by immigrants when it comes to surviving in a new community are all serious enough that they need to be given attention to. The belief of BCNC’s administration on the value of their work is what makes it easier for them to complete every task that is presented for them to finish. They know what the issues are, they know how it is to be in a new community surrounded by new faces and forced to speak a new language. The fact that there are children who are required to class, such pressure may be unnerving especially for children to deal with. This is why they need all the support they could get from a group such as BCNC.
During the observation process, it was realized that such goal created a great impact on how the entire group was structured. Dividing it into sections that provide concentrated support to youngsters who are learning in schools and are likely having a hard time adjusting to the language use of English makes the function of the group more effective in targeting the main goal they have been established to accomplish.
To make sure that the sub-goals are accomplished, the head administrator sees to it that every department leader collaboratively operates with all the others. Establishing a constant flow of communication between the leaders was an essential process that created such camaraderie between the leaders. Helping the members take their own stand and their position in the process of accomplishing the goal was also equally important as it provided everyone with the work to do therefore giving them better purpose than just being a ‘member of the group’.
Feedback on Observation
While the group is being observed, several members of the organization have been interviewed with regards their position, their roles and the efficacy by which their duties are completed accordingly. The responses were positive and were relatively imposing on the fact that practical leadership does have a great impact on the existence of any organization. For instance, when it comes to the establishing of one culture, the administrators all agree on one matter, that organizational culture is a vital part of any group’s survival. Acting as one unit, the leaders admitted that there are times that they needed to be reminded on what the purpose of the organization was. Considering that they have separate personal values they intend to apply, they had to make sure that the organizational culture was being followed closely to avoid commotions due to personal division among the leaders.
The leaders knew that the unity they apply between each other would affect the overall function of the organization therefore affecting the lives of the people they serve. This is the reason why when conflicts arise, they do the best they could to immediately attend to the matter and make sure that troubles get settled as fast and efficient as possible. They know that such conflicts are unavoidable as they are different individuals with different strong points; nevertheless, they also knew that working around such unavoidable conflicts was vital for the survival of the organization.
Reflection from Observation
Observing BCNC provides a great source of proof that having a centralized system of an established organizational culture does affect the stability and strength of any organization. Although the organization took a risky step in defining its tasks under the leadership of several individuals scattered to lead on particular departments, the said approach was proven effecting on their part. As of now, the organization continues to develop its procedures of leading, thus making more adjustments to make sure that it is able to provide the best service that its stakeholders require.
Evolving Leadership Model
The organization is currently grounded on two types of leadership model, the operator model and the engineering model. The operator model is dependent more on the interaction of leaders between each other. It imposes on the camaraderie that each leader has with another and how such connection works to create a unified position among all the individuals enjoined within the group. On the other end, the engineering model insists on the idea that the people are the ones directing the growth of the organization and not the technologies they use to operate properly. As of this point, the operator model is seemingly one of the strongest points of distinction that makes BCNC a stronghold for its stakeholders. Notably, such condition of operation makes a great impact on how well the group perform its duties for the people needing its assistance greatly.
Other points considered:
- Have you sought feedback from colleagues? What has been the result?
Yes, the feedbacks indicated that the leadership track that BCNC takes into consideration are indeed a strong source of their organization’s stability. Most of the responses were positive in relation to distinctively understanding how the operation of BCNC is managed under a cluster of strong leaders.
- What issues, problems, challenges have emerged in the organization during the time you have been observing it and discovering its culture? How did you become aware of them? Might they be related to your activity within or near this organization?
One of the hard situations that the organization had to deal with was the influx of the number of immigrants coming in and registering into the group for assistance. The delegation of duties had to be effective enough to make sure that all the members of the organization are served according to their specific needs.
- How have you become aware of your own personal assumptions and used actual observations and evidence to form new opinions (especially since RJP 1)?
Seeing how the organization operates, I saw how the theories I learned about leadership actually applies in real life scenario. From there, I was able to put my assumptions together with my observations to pin point which specific leadership style discussed in class was manifested within each developmental turn of the organization.
- What forces for or against culture change have you discovered within this organization? What explains these influences on the culture?
The driving force of a single goal that has a strong purpose for the society was the primary element that provided a sense of direction to the group as they created a culture that would best fit the role they want to take in the community and the people living in it.
Conclusion
Overall, it could be considered that the experience gained from this observation assignment serves the best aspects of defining what true leadership is and how it is able to establish a single unified organizational culture that manifests the real being of an organization. From the exemplary operations of BCNC, it has been realized that good leadership could survive the different pressures of providing service to the community through collaboratively working with all the members of the organization and dealing with issues, conflicts and responsibilities as one unit.
