Suite 201

Hialeah, FL 33014

Dear Senator Rene Garcia,

Hello, my name is (insert full name) and I am a master’s level nursing student and a constituent in your county. Recently I have become increasingly concerned about the fact that many teenagers in our community are becoming at an early age and lack the support necessary to raise their children properly. I believe this this is due to a lack of sex education in public schools at that implementing this type of education program will dramatically increase the heath and quality of life of people across the country, and certainly within your district.

Because our county is extremely diverse and has many school-age children, I believed that evaluating the health statistics for this group became necessary before drawing any conclusions on the issue. However the facts clearly show that Miami-Dade County teenagers are at a higher risk than those who live in other areas, since Hispanic and Black teenagers are more sexually active than White teenagers tend to give birth more frequently (CDC, 2011). It is important to note that this statistic doesn’t only affect the mothers, fathers, and families of teenagers who become pregnant; this issue impacts all members of our community because:

  • Teenagers who are unable to support themselves will require taxpayer programs to cover their health needs, food benefits, and housing
  • The child of the pregnant teenager usually enters custody of the parent, who should not be responsible for their children’s poor decisions
  • More than half of all high school students are having sex (Health Council of South Florida, Incorporated, 2011) and are therefore at risk for becoming pregnant or impregnating their partners
  • Teenagers who become pregnant are less likely to complete high school and have a difficult time finding jobs
  • It is also important to inform teenagers about other unintended consequences of sexual activity, such as the possibility of contracting sexually transmitted diseases; STD cases are growing in our community (Bureau of STD Control and Prevention, 2010; CDC, 2013)

To prevent teenage pregnancy and contraction of STDs, a sex education program should be provided to students in the country beginning in elementary school. Many similar programs currently believe that the best way to prevent children from engaging in this kind of reckless behavior is to teach them the unfortunate consequences from an early age; although the program will not include the details of sex at this age, the information learned at each grade level will increased depending on the age and maturity level of the students. A second way to ensure that teenagers are aware of this issue is to launch an ad campaign that briefly explains how becoming pregnant as a teenager has changed many lives for the worse; if the teenagers are able to relate with these advertisements, they will be more likely to use protection during sexual intercourse.

In conclusion, it is imperative to inform the youth of our county of the negative consequences of having unprotected sex. Although this is their mistake, it is our job to educate them because it is ultimately our tax money that is used to support them when they are unable to afford this life choice. Since it is important to increase the health of our community and it would be more beneficial to spend tax money elsewhere, either of the two education plans I proposed should be implemented.

Sincerely,

Name
