It was put forth by Abraham Lincoln that individuals have the supreme right to initiate a resistance and overturn an oppressive government despite the lack of it during his time. The methodologies of altering structures of oppression such as those used by Mohandas K. Gandhi and Lech Walesa were seen as a success despite the numerous number of years spent in seeking liberation. The prolonged endurance of the fighters of liberation is achieved through numerous means inclusive of;

To begin with, there has to be clear and articulate objectives that are a reflection of the people’s grievances and a clear illustration of the injustices that have been borne drawn up by the leaders of the civilian based movement. Secondly, the recruited individuals within the movement need to be from all walks of life so as to unify the opposition against ousting the prevailing regime and also to broaden the scope of non-cooperation and to have a diversity within the ranks. This is important so as to ensure their political success. The third consideration is the development of strategic estimates of necessities, political, and economic sources that are used by the prevailing rule so as to employ practices and schemes that will minimize the influence of the oppressive power.

The fourth consideration involves the horizontal scaling of the resistance across the entire nation. This is employed so as to strain each and every repressive apparatus of the prevailing regime and with minimal physical risk minimizing the fear of participation by other citizens. The advantage of legitimacy is attained when the processes of resistance minimize violence and this being the fifth consideration it is important since acts of brutality contradicts the fundamental principles of the movement’s formation. In addition, the sixth strategy should involve a drive aimed to discredit the regime’s leadership amongst the soldiers and policemen. The seventh consideration is for the movement to seek assistance from abroad in numerous forms including; direct aid from foundations, non-governmental institutions, and foreign governments that bear sincere goals. Additionally, sanctions and bans on the rulers instead of citizens should be aimed at.

The eighth and ninth consideration respectively is for the movement to prepare for final outright repression and be aware of the periods of breaks for regrouping and exploiting opportunities for negotiation for more secure political space and as the movement gathers increased momentum, it needs to increase the force of resistance to cause the oppressive regime to be on the defensive.
