Business Plan

Based upon the Memorandum to Management and Employees of Esso Petroleum the management team has developed a persuasive business report to submit to upper management and the corporate stock holders and owners of the company in order to implement new plans for facilitating a more viable working relationship between management and the employees of the North American and international sites especially with hopes to collaborate and establish a working relationship with all workers in the field areas and management levels.

  • Improve communication with management and field operations through innovative training programs such as Dale Carnegie training seminars both in-house and seminars in North Carolina.
  • Teams will attend North Carolina seminars in groups throughout the months of March, April, May and June 2010 as scheduled by supervisors.
  • Management will attend seminars with operations.
  • Separate training seminars will be scheduled for staffing personnel other than operations including laboratory, engineers and office personnel.
  • Contractors will be required to attend in-house communications classes and classes will be funded directly by contracting firm.
  • A minimum of eight hours will be required by each contract employee and should be completed within a one month period commencing February 1, 2010.
  • George Dupry of Human Resources should be contacted for any questions for employees and director of contracting company should be contacted for contract personnel.
  • Maintenance personnel and contract maintenance personnel are not required to attend any form of communication training.
  • Cultural surveys will be passed out on February 1, 2010 to all mentioned employees and contractors that are required to attend in-house and on-site communication seminars and should be filled out and returned to Human Resources no later than February 7, 2010. There is no requirement to put your name on the survey.
  • Another questionnaire will be passed out on February 7, 2010 accessing each person’s individual level of communication which will aid the management team to help the individual to prepare for the North Carolina trip. This is only an aid to help benefit each employee on their trip to North Carolina. There are no wrong or right answers so please answer truthfully. There will be a series of true and false and multiple choice answers as well as a short essay portion on the questionnaire. The last part of the questionnaire will give space to allow each employee to give his/her expectations of what he/she hopes to accomplish during the North Carolina trip and how he/she hopes to accomplish that task.

The following represents a typical day at the three day seminar in North Carolina:

Day One

  • Breakfast
  • Business Writing and Communications
  • Essentials of Dynamic Public Speaking
  • Break for Lunch
  • Strengthening Your Skills in the Workplace with Effective Communication
  • Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication Cues
  • What are Powerful Communication Skills for Minorities and Women?
  • Proofreading Skills

Day Two

  • Breakfast
  • Effectively Communicating During Times of Distress
  • How to Become an Outstanding Communicator
  • Practicing Listening Skills
  • Learning When to Speak
  • Break for Lunch
  • Learning How to Handle Conflict and Handling Resolution Effectively
  • Communicate with Diplomacy and Tact
  • Be an Effective Leader
  • Be a Persuasive Communicator

It is anticipated after the formal training of all mentioned employees each will have the basic needed communication skills necessary to effectively exchange information with each other as well as management through speech, signals writing and behavior. The quality of the working environment should improve and there should be a decrease in hostility in the workplace as well as an increase in worker morale. An increase in worker morale makes an increase in work production. Effective communication gives people natural energy and promotes harmony within a corporate environment making a manager’s job easier. Human Resources should have fewer problems with respect to disciplinary problems for employees should be able to resolve minor conflicts between themselves effectively without having minor issues escalate.

Unfortunately people are not born great communicators. People must learn to be great communicators through self-discipline and learned techniques just like a child has to learn to ride his/her first bicycle. There are certain techniques which must be mastered in a certain style. The concept of a win-win discipline should be remembered as well as focusing on keeping conflict at a minimum.

It is important to note that verbal and non-verbal communication is the way to express yourself to others and a first response is the most noticed one to express yourself hence should be portrayed with much thought and done so accordingly with thought and poise. The restructuring of communication at Esso hopes to improve relations between management and workers and reduce conflict at the plant through such positive actions.
