Paper on Raising an Issue, Essay Example

At present, I am having particular issues with my mother especially regarding my course selection and the manner by which I am planning to apply it as a career. As for now, there is not so much of an agreement with me and my mother regarding my choice of career. Proving myself to her is so much of a challenge especially that she has expansive expectations especially knowing that she has accomplished so much in her life in her own career.  Hence, to raise an issue I think I have to deal with the need of establishing to her what I want and what I plan so much to consider as part of my future.

Raising the Issue:

First stage:  It is of course first important to set the common ground between my mother and me; a sense of agreement that would allow me and her to meet in the middle hence making a good connection.  To establish this, I shall say:

“Mom, I am so thankful that you have great concern about me and my future. I appreciate that so much since I understand that you simply want the best for me. Being my mom, I really appreciate that you want to get involved”

Second Stage: After the setting of the common ground, I do want to establish the real issue by saying:

“However, I do like to know what I really am capable of doing; and to do that, I need to explore my capacities. Don’t you think?”

Third Stage: Getting off her idea from her and having her agree with my idea is the next step after helping her understand what the real issue is.

Fourth Stage:  Making a good argument on why my side has to be heard out through the most polite manner possible. This is especially important as I am dealing with my mother regarding this particular matter. To do this, I would say:

“I would like you to be a part of everything I want to do mom, but please do understand that there are things that I need to deal with myself. Nevertheless, I really would like to have you around to assist me. I would appreciate this so much and I sincerely hope that you would understand my situation as I would like to become the best that I could in my own terms.”

Along with this, I would like to establish the fact that my mother should be able to understand that she has to have reasonable expectations about me. To make sure of this, I want to say:

“.. But along with this mom, I would like you to know that I might and will surely make mistakes along the way; which I would definitely learn from…. I hope that you understand that like you, all these twists and turns would teach me more than hurt me and I sincerely hope you’d trust me on this one”

I do expect that after handling this conversation with my mom, she would understand me more. I do have inkling to the capacity of my mom to understand my stand in the matter. With the capacity of handling a good and agreeable communication with her, I do think she would open up her mind to the real capacity I have and likely make me more confident in the path that I have chosen.
