Review

From the articles read a question that is foremost, which could be researchable pertains to ‘what are the psychological effects of discrimination as it relates to one’s health?’ Health discrimination is a social problem constructed by the influential in society. However, the discriminated feels helpless, unloved and becomes withdrawn. These outcomes are often is relative to the person’s age, social status and family relationships. Therefore, the severity of each psychological effect depends on how integrated each person is the internal and expernal environment.

Low integration can result in very adverse impact could cripple the individual mentally. The first stage could be depression. As this symptom progresses more intense ones could manifest. These include manic behavior. Persons could express suicidal thoughts and even attempt or commit suicide. Further, the person could become so dysfunction that he./she cannot be in the company with others and may have to be restrained.

The writer discussed an article advancing that stigma is responsible for health disparities in the society. Sigma the author contends is associated with labeling, stereotyping and discrimination eventually. Ultimately, loss of self-esteem occurs. While this is true the causative factors do vary in relation to population disparities. Could it be that population disparities creatg sigma? Who are the persons classified among groups afflicted by health disparities? Most often they are the poor, underprivileged, children, blacks and Hispanics in some societies. My contention is that persons of a high social status despite the disease there is no stigmatization.

On the converse they may form a foundation addressing the disease. For example, Magic Johnson was diagnosed with HIV over 20 years ago. While he might have been marginalized because he had to quit playing the game he was never stigmatized. Magic was used as a role model for HIV infected people in the world. So health disparities and one’s social status creates the stigmatization.
