Essay

Because of the necessary calibers of writing in all levels of education, I have many years of experience in writing with proper grammar, punctuation, and correct sentence structures. Having to write in such a fashion is not limited to just English and writing disciplines as these same rules apply to most academic subjects and professions. The strengths that I have in these areas are being able to comprehend and understand the English language in a very profound nature. If a sentence is not structured correctly, I will notice what is wrong with upon reading it. A weakness that I might have is that I have grown slightly dependent on technology to help correct any grammar mistakes that I make. Although I use technology in my everyday life when writing, I would still be able to get by without it although not as effectively.

A way I might be able to overcome this weakness is by balancing between when I use technology for grammar assistance against using my own knowledge. This will keep my mentality and understanding of the English language sharp in case I do not have access to technology. Writing mechanics are essential in writing. There needs to be a set of rules for writing and grammar that everybody can conform to. This way everybody will understand each other’s writings because they are all in the same fields of communication. Without such rules, it would be equivalent to trying to write in a foreign language which you are not familiar with.

The language I use in writing is slightly different from my language in everyday speech. Everyday speech presents more opportunities for slang or social modifications of the English language. For example, I frequently use the term “bro” as a synonym for “brother” when engaging in social conversations. However, I would never write the term “bro” in any of my writings, instead I would use the English word it indicates—brother—in the appropriate context. Writing in social media is the closest writing equivalent to everyday conversations because most people do not feel the need to follow grammar and punctuation standards in social networks such as Facebook or Twitter.
