Pop Culture, Essay Example

Essay

Since there is no indication where this person who resides in an area cut off from mass culture is located, this student has grappled with what artifact should be left for this individual to find.  No indication is given as to whether this person can read and if electricity exists in the area.  Consequently, since the finder would be unable to play any of our North American music, not only because of lack of electricity with which to play it, but also without the means with which to play it, any recorded music is not a possibility.  Without electricity, a cell phone of any calibre is also out of the question.  Children’s toys that replicate some of our pop culture items and require neither electricity nor batteries came to mind, but were also rejected.  Furthermore, since to qualify as an artifact of a particular country that object must have been made in that country, a fact, which may be unknown.

According to Alex MacLean, “An artifact is a human-made object which gives information about the culture of its creator and users.”  Furthermore, according to several websites, those items should be  made in the country the artifact represents.  Coins and silverware are often given as examples.  As a result, this student being aware that  during this year the Canadian penny will cease to exist  decided that a small decorative pouch made by a member of a Canadian native band (qualifies as an artifact) filled with pennies would be a most-suitable-dual artifact to find.  It is hoped that this would signify to the finder that (s)he has a beautiful Canadian-made pouch by a member of the country’s native culture that could hold many things, but at this time contains what soon will be the country’s historic penny. If the finder is unacquainted with modern-day coinage, the pennies and pouch  may be viewed as having utilitarian and game value and  as a message from the gods that they will receive riches.
