Reaction Paper

Summary

The article talks about the promotion of a positive classroom climate to improve student performance. Reinforcement of student performance is a major classroom management activity that helps increase academic achievement and improves student conduct towards greater learning. Various methods can be utilized to achieve this, due to the fact that each student have individual needs because of their diverse backgrounds, disparate learning abilities and different reinforcement and learning histories. It is therefore important to develop an extensive set of potential reinforcers as part of a teacher’s instructional classroom management planning. Tangible reinforcers include any physical object that is given to students as a reward for good behavior. Social reinforcers involve interactions between two or more people.

Alternative Viewpoint

The experience may be generally positive for most children but it can also be a time when disruptive, aggressive, antisocial, and non-academic patterns of behavior emerge. Implementation of classroom management strategies can make problems worse if not fully understood by educators. Different approaches need to be employed as each child is different or interventions may not be effective. As a result, teachers may experience feelings of frustration which may impair the relationship between the teacher and the student.

Opinion

In my opinion, the success of any reinforcement technique or tools will ultimately depend on the teacher’s ability to effectively communicate the sincerity of his or her concern. Teaching and learning is a process of daily interaction that is largely relational. It is thus important that students first develop trust in the teacher so that a mutually beneficial relationship can be built between the two to promote and encourage learning. Admittedly, student misbehavior and classroom management are among the most difficult and disturbing aspects of teaching. The role of teachers is crucial because the classroom is the first environment outside the home where children must interact extensively with peers and a strong adult authority figure other than their parents. The child’s integration into the classroom is a critical time in social and academic development. The rules and restrictions on behavior required in classrooms can be far more demanding or rigid compared to rules employed at home as children must expectedly learn a great number of new behavioral skills.
