Potty Training Complete, Essay Example

Words: 304

Essay

The visual cue I choose to use to encourage positive classroom behavior is potty training cards. This is a tool that will enable children to effectively remember the steps they need to take to become successful at learning to use the bathroom appropriately. They explain how to go about using the bathroom, from pulling down one’s pants, to drying one’s hands after washing them. The cards show this step by step process in detail, and the use of these cards is quite effective for the very young, visual learners, those who lack language skills, and for those who struggle with focusing their attention (Mayo Clinic, 2015). Generally, this is a perfect description for children who are learning to use the bathroom by themselves.  While many children exhibit some form of mistaken behavior in the maturing process, this particular type of mistaken behavior occurs at the first level-out of the three-and is generally not too difficult to modify (Gartrell, 2013). The mistaken behavior often occurs in the very young, and is usually due to being unfamiliar with the rules. The visual cue created with be an excellent reminder to children in the classroom.

Choosing to address this behavior will help a child to be more self-reliant, easier to manage in the classroom, and generally happier. In learning the visual cues that can accompany, and eventually replace the verbal cues (Gartrell, 2013) used, a child can become an expert at using the bathroom. This is an important milestone that all children need to learn to gain independence. Using these potty training cards as a tool to encourage positive behavior and reinforce learning outcomes will serve to help children excel in their social and emotional development.
