Discuss why you think a CIO survey is important for the HMIS industry

CIO survey is very important for HMIS industry since it provide a clear picture of what the situation is like in HMIS industry at the moment and this forms a very good basis for future improvements. The CIO survey main purpose was to collect information about IT priorities, technology adoption, application usage, security and other important factors in the use of IT to promote healthcare services. The survey provides relevant information from IT experts on what should be done to HMIS industry so as to enhance healthcare. Some of the suggestions that were provided as top IT priorities by the experts as per the CIO survey include; replacing, upgrading/ implementing clinical information systems, implementing technology to minimize medical errors, and implementing electronic medical record (EMR) (Weigle, Markovitz, and Pon, s2001). 307 health care IT professionals who participated in the survey also identified clinical applications and data security as a major cause of the need of new technology called identity management and security technologies which are needed to improve healthcare.

Based on the information provided in the Mini-Case and survey, explain what types of hardware investments are most important to the future of HMIS.

The types of hardware investments that are important to the future of HMIS include; the implementation of computerized practitioner order entry and electronic media record (EMR) SYSTEMS. Also investment in clinical information sharing and closed loop medication management that makes use of bar coding or RFID technology is most important for the future of HMIS.EMR devise has a huge support from many clinicians and clinical decision support system for it replaces the paper medical record as the primary source of patient information. RFID technology will enable safety of patient in formation and will as well quicken the data recovery from the information systems as may be needed by the healthcare professional. This will promote information and management systems which in turn will ensure quality patient care (Tan, 2010).

Compare your selections and reasoning with the actual survey results.

Actually, improvement of technology in information management systems for healthcare facilities is one step towards achieving quality healthcare services. According to the survey, all the IT experts who participated in the survey a least acknowledged the need for technology in improvement of HMIS system. Healthcare Facilities where information technology had taken root proved to be offering better healthcare services as compared to facilities where IT had not yet been embraced. Of the ten IT applications the respondents indicated important to their organization in the next two years included clinical information systems, computerized practitioner order entry and electronic medical record (Weigle,Markovitz, and Pon, s2001).

Based on the survey results, discuss why you think investment in Electronic Health Records (EHR) has become a top priority for CIOs in the coming year.

EHR is a top priority for CIOs in the coming years because it promotes innovation and technology. HMIS is key department in ensuring that healthcare services are quality. So investment in such technology will enable HMIS developers to learn to integrate, adapt and innovate the technology. EHR is a technology vision and thus the sharing of this technology by CIOs is so critical in determining the success of HMIS implementation. As well, the extent to which employees accept HMIS innovation and working collaborate with one another and with their customers improves health care services. Under the supervision of CIO healthcare services organizations will generate much revenue as well as providing quality services to its customers which finally leads to a transformed healthcare organization (Tan, 2010).
