Preparing Yourself for an International Project, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 306

Essay

How would you go about preparing yourself for an international project? What are the possible pros and cons? How would you deal with the perceived cons?

In management, it is important to be aware of the culture of the host country when expanding operations or doing a project on a global scale. So, for an international project, planning and execution is essential. There are so many special considerations to take into account, such as language barriers, culture shock, wage rates, local laws, etc. So, for designing the project, it is a good idea to check local codes and business practices in the host country. Also, it is important to consider the climate and weather conditions in the host country. Another thing to consider is whether or not to buy materials before taking the project overseas, because costs need to be considered.

Some of the pros and cons include things that have to do with culture differences. For example, in some countries, it is inappropriate for a man and woman to communicate. There are different customs that go along with certain cultures, and it is the manager’s responsibility to be familiar with the customs and practices of the international country, prior to getting on their soil and conducting business. It would be disrespectful to violate norms of the host country and very bad for business.

I would deal with any perceived cons by making sure I was informed and prepared, as well as my team. We would conduct training on what to expect and how to conduct business and behave while on an international project, according to whatever the host country’s customs, rules, practices, and culture stipulates. This could include teaching the team about the do’s and don’ts of a certain culture and possibly doing some role playing, and assigning “homework” so that everyone is well-equipped to tackle the changes.
