Privacy Issues, Essay Example

Words: 308

Essay

If I were an executive at Microsoft and had the opportunity of making a ton of money, I would not sell to political campaigns the access to customer’s data. From my perspective, it is unethical behavior. In addition to this, it goes against the company’s rules and regulations policies regarding the privacy of clients. By web companies selling the information to political campaigns, customers of wed companies get taken advantage of by the businesses. Unethical issues arise here, as clients do not receive notifications of the use of their information. Additionally, the location of the tracking information is in privacy statements, which clients do not read. Most of the people who take the chance of reading the statements tend not to understand as the language used tends to be complicated. For example, selling of information to campaigners does not get mentioned directly. Since I would be against the unethical behavior, I would take the initiative of making clients aware of information tracking. This would be efficiently carried out by making them chose whether or not they would allow tracking.

When an individual provides their information such as names, zip codes, email address and other information while using web services, they get assured of privacy. Therefore, for a web company to pass customers information indirectly would be violating their own policies. This act of violation means breaking the law and one may be sued especially after the client finds out. So as, to avoid this problem, it is better to on the safe side and not selling.

The moral perspectives behind my decisions are based on the principles of deontology. This moral philosophy states that one has a moral duty in doing the right things. Based on this, individual’s privacy rights must be upheld. Part of my duties as an executive would be to ensure that customers’ rights are protected.
