Classmates,

The photo of the home appears to be the American Dream made concrete.  As Americans, we judge ourselves by the possessions that we have.  However, the accretion of objects and property is not an indication of success.  If the measure of success is homeownership, a very large percentage of Americans never achieve success.  According to the United States Census Bureau, homeownership rates from 1965 to the present have always hovered between sixty and seventy percent (“Housing Vacancies and Homeownership (CPS/HVS)”).  If homeownership is success, this statistic indicates that between thirty and forty percent of Americans are never successful.  Owning a home, or any other material object, does not make a person successful.  Success is objective and is only judged by the subject and the observer.  Additionally, the determination of success can differ for the subject and for the observer.  Essentially, we determine what is success for us and for others whom we observe.
