Strategies and new initiatives for recruiting, retaining and training our health care workers

Even though health care professions are in demand due to global shortages, still there seems to be a glut in the market of certain categories of health care professions. Medical Assistants  for example, have flooded the markets. Importantly, since they are considered cheap labor most doctors’ offices and to some extent hospitals hire them above registered nurses (RN). Herein lays a major strategic intervention regarding recruitment, retainance and training of health care workers.

Quantity never replaces quality. Therefore, improve on quality and reduce quantity. Medical assistants cannot perform duties of a registered nurse who is needed in clinical practice. Consequently, in improving quality of health care quantity of non-professionals in the form of medical assistants and certified nursing assistants, must be replaced. Strategies must be designed for their upgrade to registered nurses within the clinical practice. Intensify the training of registered nurses and reduce these emerging categories of healthcare professionals who just take the job temporarily. A stratified registered nurse remains on the job and seeks professional improvement towards an advanced nurse level.

What to tell middle/high school students to encourage them to think seriously about health care as a career

While there may be need for categories of health care staff to assist registered nurses in the execution of their duties middle and high school student should be given the options available for their professional development if anyone choses to join health care professions. Also, they should be able to distinguish among the professions and categories, when seriously thinking about a health career. They must be encouraged to start at a category, which would enhance retainance through falling in love with their career.
