Putting It All Together, Questionnaire Example

Question 1. Examine three programs offered by the health department in your area to determine if the programs focus on primary, secondary, or tertiary prevention.

The following three programs are offered by the health department in Bowie, Maryland as part of a larger group of services by the health department.

Maryland Children’s Health Insurance Program

This program utilizes the State and Federal funds to provide insurance cover for all of Maryland’s children. This program provides a health cover that includes all health benefits for all children up to the age of 19. This program is a tertiary prevention program as insurance cover only helps to ensure health services at the point of need.

The Maryland Medicaid Pharmacy Program Recipient Access Hotline

This is a toll-free hotline for recipients who have pharmacy issues. 1-800-492-5231 is the Medicaid Pharmacy Program Recipient Access Hotline. This is a secondary preventive program

Larkin Chase Care and Rehabilitation Centre

This is a centre that is dedicated to all spectrums of rehabilitation. This includes physical rehabilitation to psychological and medical rehabilitation. This is a secondary prevention program.

Question 2. Plan to implement a health promotion activity that you and fellow students can offer to a group in your community. Identify what additional community groups could be involved in the project.

There is need for the promotion of HIV/Aids prevention amongst the youth. This is due to the underlying fact that the youth are increasingly becoming sexually active at a young age. This promotion activity will mainly take place in schools. The following groups can be involved:

• Heart to Hand Incorporated
• GapBuster Learning Centre Riverdale Office
• The Youth Aids Association

Question 3. Attend or contact a maternal-child clinic in your county. Describe the public health issues identified at the clinic. Describe the health promotion activities the nurses suggested for the parents.

The Pregnancy Clinic Bowie Crofton Clinic was the maternal clinic of choice. There were little to no public health issues that were identifiable at the clinic. Most of the nurses suggested that cleanliness is of utmost importance when handling new-borns. They suggested good hygiene habits plus the disinfection of all surfaces when handling toddlers.

Question 4. Examine a current issue of a parenting magazine. What percent of the magazine promotes healthy choices for parents? Select one article or advertisement and determine what level of prevention is involved.

“Picky Eater Solutions”, an article by Parenting.com, a parenting magazine highlights how parents can deal with young children who are particularly choosy when it comes to eating healthy foods. In my opinion, 99% of the article promotes healthy choices for parents as it aims to give parents ideas on how to come up with a diet that is interesting to children, but still healthy. This article depicts primary prevention as it aims to put in place measures to primarily prevent any health issues in children.
