The purpose of quality management in the health care industry

The contemporary healthcare environment is associated with inalienable challenges due to the need of improving the patients’ outcomes, execution of initiatives of risk and quality management and redesigning the processes of business. The increasing complexity in health care industry has necessitated adoption of improved methods that are aimed at reducing the cost of operations and offer accessibility to novel technology. Global health care firms have embraced programs of quality management with the objective of achieving the high echelons of demand in enhancing service delivery as well as health care clinical quality (Westcott, 2003).

Implementation of quality management in health care industry is based on the premise that, operations should result to superior quality of services. The concept of quality management in health care industry therefore extends benefits to the clients and the entire stakeholders in the industry. The results involve enhancement of quality of services in a manner that changes the processes of operation, the structures as well as the responsibilities of workers in the health care industry. Incorporation of quality management in health care industry therefore translates to focusing on quality of all operations (Thareja, 2008).

Quality management in health care industry also improves the level of efficiency, safety as well as effectiveness of processes in health care and performance of human resources. Quantitative and qualitative approaches are a target in this regard. As a general rule, improvement methodologies are a requirement in health care industry globally, although many other industries started using quality management much earlier. Quality management has become a common aspect in majority of institution in the health care industry. Most of the physicians are currently trying to identify methods that are likely to yield improvements in their activities.
