Racial Categories, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 294

Essay

Since biology is not in tandem with race, racial categories should be discarded without a second thought. In the context of race, none is superior to the other and as such, an African American has a similar genetic composition as an Oriental Asian. The mentality that one race can be superior to the other was introduced by Johann Blumenbach in a study he dubbed On the Natural Varieties of Mankind. According to him, the white people possess a large skull, an indication of a large brain capacity.

Racial classification is not useful in the society as it only causes division and stirs peace among people. Globally, scientists have agreed that all persons are equal and the outside color is only because of environmental impacts. Arguably, race can be a good tool to boost self-esteem, mutual help and offer a sense of belonging to people (Bamshad and Olsen).

Even while people cease to make a follow up on racial classification, it will still be possible to explain racial disparities through daily occurrences. In the American context, the African Americans continue to grapple with the issue of white dominance (Spickard). In terms of social construct, the white people have established undesirable myths such as bestiality, laziness, sexuality, and sin, in order to discredit the blacks.

Racial inequities cannot be reinforced without notions of the race because people are so much into issues of racism and like sharing a common experience and identity (Prewitt 45). The political and economic actions are mostly defined with the use of race.
