Racial Gaps in Education, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 321

Essay

Education is essential for an effective and efficient workforce. This is because a well-educated workforce is highly skilled. The skills gained through education help ensure efficiency in the production processes employed across all industries by minimizing wastage and maximizing output. This means that the developing country in question would growth faster within a relatively short period of time if it has an educated and skilled labour force. However, this has been hampered by the fact that race is a determining factor to the education one receives.

The better the education one receives, the better the availability of opportunities to individuals and students of a much higher class. This creates a stratification of the society on all fronts and sectors. This is because the level of education is also used as a segregation tool. Higher levels of education can only be realized if and only if one has the financial power to pay for the education. This almost always locks out the minority races.

Since 1977, the largest number of high school dropouts has been individuals from the Hispanic community followed by those from the black or African-American community. This means that it is more likely for a Hispanic student to drop out of high school than a black or white student. The number of college enrolments between 1977 and 2007 has also been affected by a student’s racial or ethnic background. According to the 2008 Digest of Education Statistics, it has always been more likely that a white student would get enrolled before a Hispanic or black student. it is least likely that a black student would get enrolled into college before a Hispanic student.

There are evident racial gaps in the education sector as education has always been a tool for segregation. All the Ivy-league colleges and Universities in the United States have nore white students than black and Hispanic students combined. This only serves t prove the existing racial gaps in education.
