Receiving Package, Essay Example

Essay

When the UPS delivery driver asks for me by name, I am taken by surprise because I had not ordered anything lately. The package from a local law company contains one personal diary as well as an accompanying note. The note mentions that the diary belonged to my recently-deceased grandfather who specifically wrote it for me and advised his personal lawyer to give it to me upon his death. It doesn’t take long for me to realize that my grandfather had penned down all the important lessons from his life in the diary for my sake.

I often initiate conversations with people so that I can learn from their successes and failures and here I havea dairy that basically contains all the lessons from my grandfather’s life. I don’t remember getting this much excited over a book before because I know this diary will help me prevent many expensive mistakes in life. As I read the book, I realize that most of the lessons are never taught in schoolwhich is why so few people succeed in realizing their true potential. After reading the diary, I go to my father and ask him to give me examples from my grandfather’s life that could help me better understand the lessons in the diary. My father admits that he might never have mentioned certain stories from my grandfather’s life had I not asked about them. Just this episode helps me understand the importance of asking questions and encouraging other to speak. I also compare my grandfather’s lessons with my own observations and beliefs and prepare a plan to bring positive changes in life wherever possible.

As someone who believes in continuous learning and improvement, this day could not have been any better. I had learnt more about life in a single day than I had learnt in years and this single day could also be considered the beginning of a bright future. Most importantly, the diary inspires me to ask my parents and other elders in the family to prepare of list of important life lessons for me to get guidance from. Life is short and my grandfather’s diary has given me significant head start over my peers for which I will always be grateful to my grandfather and hopefully, I also do the same for my future generations.
