Buckson’s supermarket has committed to modernizing its operations over the next twelve months by investing in:

• A new, faster check-out system
• A new website and app
• A van delivery service

Having worked at the company for over ten years, 50% of the staff are much used to the traditional approach of the company. There is a concern that some of these staff will struggle with the changes, resulting in the strategic aims of the company not being met (i.e., increased profits).

As a result, Buckson’s would like to implement a program that ensures all staff are able to work within the new system. The purpose of this report, written by TWC Management Consultancy, is to make recommendations as to what that program should involve.

Recommendations

The implementation of the new check-out system is a primary concern for the organization. Since the system is new, it is essential for Buckson’s to determine how to train the staff prior to the full implementation of this new equipment, so that they have time to adjust to these new requirements and understand how the system works before the store is fully dependent upon their skills for this purpose. As a consequence, lead cashiers should be trained on the new equipment first, and then when they appear to be proficient, they should be asked to train the other employees. This will be advantageous because it will allow all employees to adapt to this new system quickly.

Next, it is important for employees to be aware about the information contained on the store’s new website. It is possible that employees will be asked about this information and it is therefore important for them to be able to answer any and all related questions. Therefore, employees should be asked to read through the website to explore its layout in addition to the information it contains. They will then be given a brief test that will allow the store to assess their knowledge of this topic and then to provide them with any necessary remediation to ensure that these skills are learned.

Furthermore, it would be ideal to hire new employees to operate the van delivery service, but to provide current employees with knowledge of the operation so that they are able to meet delivery requirements. Since many individuals were hired without having this particular job requirement, it would be beneficial for the store to hire drivers to serve this purpose. However, employees will have their new responsibilities explained to them, which would include helping load the truck and other functions that would ensure that this part of their new store operation will be effective and profitable.
