Essay

In the book inspired by his own life, Browder (2015) talks about his motivations to become an adult who takes responsibility, stands up for his principles, and rebels against ideologies he does not agree with.

Chapter One: “Persona Non Grata” talks about how he becomes not wanted in Russia, because he represents something that the government is afraid of. Only when he is being detained and later deported he realizes that his actions must have made him powerful enemies, and that he could not do anything against the system. Despite being influential and well-connected in the West, he does not get help from the Embassy or politicians. In this chapter, the author is described as a successful businessman, a true capitalist.  Somebody who is able to grab opportunities, and take risks. The next chapter explains Browder’s motivations for becoming a capitalist.

In Chapter Two, “How Do You Rebel Against a Family of Communists”, the author tells the reader why he turned his back to both national and communist ideologies. He refused to go into politics, or mathematics, like his family, and simply did not agree with the value systems of his father and mother. Both in the academic profession, they expected him to show interest in the same areas, however, he felt like out of place, just like he did when he was detained at the Moscow Airport with the rest of the people, who looked, dressed, and spoke nothing like him. The moment when he realizes that he is rebelling against his parents comes when his mother offers to take him to Europe, so he does not have to stay at the boarding school. He decides to stay, and step up, becomes cunning, streetwise, and starts enjoying life.
