Essay

Using the material discussed during the first class (Kouzes’ and Posner’s Leadership Challenge and the Five Behaviors, Goleman’s Six Leadership Styles, and the Traits/Characteristics, etc.), contrast Coach Boone’s and Coach Yoast’s leadership behaviors, styles and traits, citing specific examples from the film

Coach Boone is coercive. In the movie he mentions that he is a winner and he must win. That shows that he is determined and will not settle on anything less than winning. He is authoritative too. He makes decisions from first day of his appointment as the coach with the hope of eliminating racism. He makes the team players to mix and stay in the same room regardless of their races. They lived and enjoyed the experience. At the end of the camp, the team was strong and had unity. His authoritative character is also shown when Petey plays the way he did not expect. He asks Petey how many miles are there and tells him to pick the ball and run each one of them. Boones is afflictive. It is out of his leadership skills that team players live in harmony regardless of race. He made blacks and whites live as roommates and learn from each other. From the experience, he creates harmony between the blacks and whites in the team. He encourages the team players to learn on how to manage their anger and live in harmony. He tells the team players that if they did not fight hatred in their hearts, they would die just like the ancestors died. Boone is a dictator. He even says that he is the law and demands that all his sayings are followed without the members asking for democracy. He is coaching. He develops leader who become coaches from the team. These leaders also become non-racists like he was and lead democratically.

On the other hand, Coach Yoast was democratic. He thinks that Boones was becoming too harsh on the boys and believes he should give the boys freedom to suggest what they want. He says that some of the boys do not respond to public criticism and need to be told what they want to know privately. At first instances, Youst and other white couches were discriminative towards Boones. We are told that Boones was to deal with a group of white couches and referees who were discriminative. Although Youst decided to be Boones’ assistant, he did this half heartedly.

How do their behaviors, styles and traits change during the film?

The two coaches have their behavior evolving throughout the movie. At first, Yoast was suspicious in working with Boone, who was a black man. This changed with time and they grew to be loving workmates. They lived to be loyal and trust worthy to each other. This is shown by the success of the players.

For each of Posner’s Five Leadership Practices/Behaviors, identify a scene in the film where that behavior was exhibited by someone other than Coach Boone or Coach Yoast.

Bertier and Campbell show the leadership skills shown by Boone and Yousta. They are both couching. They strive to lead their team mates to success and guide them through their practices. They are also democratic. Unlike Boones, they join Yousta in fighting to protect their fellow players from criticism shown by Boones. The two developed couches are also affiliative. They define ways that help in bringing together large part of the team. They are authoritative too. This is shown by their potential to bring harmony and fight for the rights of the team members. Team players were all affiliative. They participated in retaining couch Yousta and helped in bringing harmony between him and Boones.
