I weigh one hundred and twenty pounds. To figure out how many grams of protein I will need on a low protein diet, I would first convert my body weight to kilograms: 125/2.2 = 56.8kg. Since I need approximately 1g of protein per kg of body weight for a low protein diet, my dietary need for protein would be: 56.8 x 1 = 56.8 or 57 grams of protein per day. I would try to divide this as equally as I could between the 3 meals.

Protein sources such as eggs, milk, meat, poultry and fish are complete proteins with all essential amino acids and are thus considered to be of high biological value.

Three ways to add flavor to a renal diet which is restricted in both sodium and potassium (thus excluding potassium-based salt substitutes) would include 1) spices like black pepper, red pepper, chili powder, cinnamon; 2) herbs like fresh parsley, basil, oregano or rosemary, and 3) lemon, lime or orange zest or juice. I would try to even use a combination of all of the above for rubs, marinades, dips and sauces to add needed flavor to the diet.

Four foods which are liquid at room temperature (and thus count as fluids on a fluid-restricted diet) are, in order from greatest to least fluid content: popsicles, Jello, ice cream, and pudding.

For this patient, I would try to see if Food Services could serve him white rice instead of brown rice and a salad based on green beans or wax beans; these alterations would reduce the phosphorous load while still allowing the patient to have a balanced, enjoyable meal.
