Essay

Tidwell’s six-step model (Raines, 2013, p. 115) for problem solving is beneficial for all managers who are looking to assess and solve the situation in a timely manner, and effectively. However, it is also true that some of the steps are more crucial than others, when coaching team members and helping them achieve their goals. The below three steps are selected as crucial, and will be analyzed accordingly.

Conflict Analysis

This is the most important step, as it is necessary to effectively search for potential solutions and understand the other party. Without this, only acknowledgment of the conflict exists, without any hope that a solution would be found. This is why this step is ranked first in this analysis. It is much easier to deal with a conflict when somebody fully understands it, and while there is a need for communication, understanding and analyzing the issue helps through every step.

Communication Strategy Development

Without effectively planning communication, it would not be possible to collaborate. When solving problems, the two parties need to agree on the terms, and make compromises. If the expectations and goals of each person are not clearly defined, then it is impossible for the other party to understand their view. Planning when the next meetings will be held, and agreeing on sharing information is beneficial. This is why developing a communication strategy is ranked second.

Alternative Generation and Costing

It is important to analyze and assess all options, as this will allow the participant to make their own decision and use their logical approach to select the most suitable solution. It will also make the option appear a choice, instead of something that has to be done, because the manager or coach said so. This is an important aspect of manager-employee relationship, therefore, it is ranked number three.
