Respiratory Care, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 274

Essay

For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed helping others. When I was in grade school, I would often get reprimanded for assisting other students when they were having difficulty. Ironically, my assisting them often meant that my work went undone. Working with people is a passion for me. When a person is sick or suffering from an illness, it is a very scary time. Knowing that they have someone working with them that genuinely cares, often makes the ordeal a little easier. I have worked as a nurse’s assistant for over 10 years and I have loved it. In this field I have assisted with many patients who are suffering with respiratory problems. The work that I have done has sparked an interest in furthering my education. I married early and raised my children before returning to the workforce. Now that my children are able provide for themselves without a great deal of assistance from me, I believe that I can devote my attention to my studies.

As a child, I remember watching my grandmother suffer from emphysema brought on by years of working in a factory. She would have long bouts of coughing attacks and in her later years she was home bound due to the need for an oxygen tank. I often wondered why they couldn’t just fix her. Over the years, the field of respiratory therapy has expanded and many new innovations have been made. My grandmother is the reason why I have such a passion for the field. I hope that I will be able to assist people so they won’t have to suffer the way she did.
