According to Amieva & Ferguson (2011) nurses play a key role in achieving United Nations development program development goals millennium development goals. The experts emphasized that advanced nurses functioning as midwives have one of the greatest responsibilities. For example, every year 350, 000 women die due to child birth as reported by United Nations statistics. Accompanying this crisis is the fact that 215 million women have no access to contraception or education about it. Millennium development goal (MDG5) five has been exceptionally slow in its advancement. Sadly, achievement or non-achievement of MDG5 affects fulfillment of MDG 4. Therefore, the role nurses play in establishing this equilibrium is essential. Contraception has proven to reduce one third of maternal deaths international. Nurses are the main health promotion agents in this regard (Amieva & Ferguson, 2011).
Midwives and community health workers are strategic partners in achieving MDG goals. World Health Organization recognizes through the United Nations’ MDG initiative that Nursing and midwifery professional disciplines have many common characteristic features and problems, which strength their potential to make valuable contributions together in the healthcare delivery system. While they execute distinctive professional practices overlapping occurs in a perfect complementary model as roles and scopes of practice are entwined (Amieva & Ferguson, 2011).
As such, these professionals are required to each establish appropriate standards that regulate and support evidence-based practice of a high quality. In their distinct roles effective contributions of quality health outcomes are delivered. As strategies are implemented to fulfill MDGs incorporating every category of nurse special considerations must be given to each country’s peculiar situation with regards to financial constraints, culture and natural disaster potentials (Amieva & Ferguson, 2011).
Consequently, this visit to the greatly United Nations has deepened my knowledge and understanding of the organizations’ goals, principles and activities. It would appear that all UN activities are catered towards improving quality of health care across the world, but especially among countries experiencing immense difficulties in their population’s health. I learnt the importance of nurses in some populations where the diagnosis and intervention reducing infant mortality caused by pneumonia are when infants home born. This visit helped me to identify with poverty and how it affects healthcare delivery in any country. While developed nations many boast of sophisticated health care, poverty limits a great portion of the population from accessing the quality of care they deserve.
Evaluation of professional growth from the experience.
With respect to professional growth visiting United Nations has helped me understand the value of being a nurse and the importance of upgrading skills to facilitate continued MDCs alignment. Experts have contended that care quality and patient safety are key features of nursing practice. If these attributes are to be maintained professional growth is mandatory. Further, when nurses in clinical care settings develop a relationship with community health workers (CHWs) their role is enhanced in fulfilling MDGs. Technical knowledge and skills are shared, which is a aspect of professional development. I propose changing y level of interactions with others on the healthcare team realizing as part of my professional growth that we are all playing an important erole where ever we function to produce some degree of MDGs achievement. Respect for each professional role towards fulfilling these goals enahances the collaboration required for success (Amieva & Ferguson, 2011).
