Sergio Leone Has Influenced Filmmaking, Outline Example

Subject Context

1. The broad subject heading under which my topic of the way Sergio Leone has influenced filmmaking falls is Film. However, I am going to need to narrow it down a bit and focus on the positive ways in which he influenced filmmaking of Western films and how he influenced others.

2. The topic I wish to address underneath that heading is his films in particular and the people that he worked with in order to influence them to be good directors or great professionals in the film industry.

3. I will focus on Leone’s films, how he influenced others, and how he made a special impact on the film industry as a whole. I will attempt to prove by persuasion that he was an excellent director and that he made a difference in the world of film.

Audience

1. If given the opportunity, I would like to publish this essay in a Film industry trade paper or journal in print form or electronically via a website. My audience will be critics, scholars, filmmakers, students and fans of American and Italian cinema, particularly those interested in the Western genre. Additionally, my intended audience would be Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood fans and fans of directors who have claimed to have been influenced by Sergio Leone (for example Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino).

2. In the beginning, the audience may have a good bit of knowledge about the broad subject, but may not have very much knowledge on the subtopic, Sergio Leone, if they are not familiar with Westerns or directors in general. Quite honestly, I believe that the research question pops into the audience’s mind very rarely unless they are fixated on directors and Westerns in particular or have a working knowledge of Leone and his work. However, I do think that it can pop up every time they watch a Sergio Leone movie.

3. I plan to cover my subject for those who are slightly educated in the art of filmmaking to those who are outright film scholars and film fanatics. The layman that goes to see a film “every once in a while” may not care enough to read my essay or pick up on some of the essay’s film terminology. Due to the audience that I am writing to, I believe that I can get the reader up to speed in one paragraph.

4. I believe that the audience will be very sophisticated. It may not be sophisticated specifically in expertise on the director; however, I think it will be sophisticated in the area of film and the industry of entertainment.
