Aragon, A., (2007). “Does milk do your body good”? Men’s Health. 22 (10), 124-126.
Aragon, a health professional, researched the disadvantages of cow’s milk. In this work, she is providing her research on issues related to cow’s milk and human health. She asked questions about the issues people have on the consumption of cow’s milk and she presents her answers in simple and concise literature on a non-health professional level. Aragon addresses the questions touching on the fat burning, muscle mass, cows hormones and anti-biotic, and skim versus whole milk. Further, the author provides options for milk substitutes. Most importantly, the author provides substantial evidence that milk is good for consumption as she elaborates clearly the importance of milk and its related human health advantages. Though she claims that cow’s milk is good for human consumption, she acknowledges that it is also associated with dozens of human diseases, including iron deficiency, anemia, allergies, diarrhea, heart diseases, colic, cramps, gastrointestinal bleeding, sinusitis, skin rashes, increased frequency of colds and flu, lung cancer, multiple sclerosis, asthma, arthritis and many more.
This article will support my claim on the perceptions people have concerning the consumption of cow’s milk over their health and conger those claims by the evidences provided in this article.
Elwood, P. C., Pickering, J. E., Hughes, J. J., Fehily, A. M., & Ness, A. R. (2004). “Milk drinking, ischaemic heart disease and ischaemic stroke II”. Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 58 (5), 718-724.
Research on groups of people from different countries with issues of heart attacks and vascular diseases in relation to the consumption of cow’s milk and death rates are described in this literature. The authors begin their research by explaining the relationships that exist between consuming cow’s milk and cardiovascular disorders. They also explain the challenges of the cases studied in different countries and ends up ruling them out for data that are more substantial. This literature presents the statistics that the authors complied from multiple studies they conducted in different countries and concludes that the analyzed ratios reveal a very little connection between high or low milk consumption and developing heart cardiovascular infection symptoms. Although the authors provide a statistical proof that vascular diseases are not associated with the amount of milk people consume, they state that infants who are introduced to cow’s milk at earlier stages of development can develop complications related to heart diseases and cardiovascular manifestations, unlike infants who were only breast fed on mother’s milk at earlier stages of development. This work is very important for my claim “should human beings consume cow’s milk” for it provides supportive evidence about cow’s milk and its relation to common human infections.
Keon, J., (2010). The Disturbing Truth About Cow’s Milk and Your Health. New Society Publishers.
The author, who was the former weight lifter, provides credible evidence about his belief that cow’s milk is important in muscle development. Keon discusses his personal experiences of over-indulgence on cow’s milk consumption. He also discusses the benefits of cow’s milk over breast milk, since contaminated milk can allow the contaminants to be passed on from the mother to the fetus.
Keon gives supportive evidence from published health journals on the insignificant imact of milk on bone health in children, in addition to its health related complications. He argues that milk consumption is not only harmful to children but also to mature individuals. The author presents himself as the case study having consumed milk a lot with the intention of wanting to grow huge and the health problems he suffered later in his life. The article end by stating the importance of having alternatives to cow’s milk to avoid the underlying health manifestations related to its consumption. This literature will be useful in my research on should people consume cow’s milk by enabling me prove the reality about cow’s milk and its related nutrients especially calcium and bone development.
Wiley, A.S., (2010). “Re-imagining Milk”. Taylor & Francis e-Library.
Wiley discusses in her article about the notion people have about dairy milk consumption in U.S and other countries. She provides medical facts concerning the consumption of dairy milk; how the digestive system processes the milk and how the milk affects one’s body system constructively and negatively. She explains the history of milk production as it is believed to originate from cattle, sheep and goats among European cultures. The author further discusses the importance of calcium and proteins in the people’s diet. Wiley explains that people should have a different perspective of cow’s milk because one recent researcher has found that it is associated with health complications like asthma, cardiovascular diseases and many other complications in infants. She concludes her literature by highlighting that people should dismiss past milk production experiences and usage and embrace new milk production techniques for growth and strength. Most importantly, people must overcome health related issues of milk that occur in adult hood due to milk consumption at infancy.
This literature will be useful to my research study for in will provide a historical background of milk origin and past milk consumption practice, which bring about associated health hazards and the improved milk production practices which help in promoting improved health standards. Furthermore, this work rules out the claim by many individuals who believe that milk consumption should be practiced in the same way it used to be in the past.
Kulman, L. (2001). “Don’t sour on milk; the health benefit beats any risks”. U. S. News & World Report, 130 (23), 64.
Kulman article provides an explanation of how the America population perceives cow’s milk consumption as having more disadvantages than advantages. It further describes the false perception that people have concerning the consumption of milk and their lack of knowledge about calcium consumption. The author also explains how the consumption of calcium, which plays a major part on our diet, can be of importance or of great risk. The article also gives alternatives of calcium sources besides milk. Also found in this article is an argument about the controversies surrounding dairy milk consumption especially the claims that, dairy milk is associated with many health problems. This article will help me develop evidence-based claims on the importance and the need of dairy milk in our diet. This source will also be useful to my research because it provides a detailed explanation of other benefits associated with milk consumption other than calcium. It also explains the constituents found in milk that help in protecting individuals against possible health manifestations.
