Social Forces in Society, Essay Example

Essay

Growing up in a changing world, becoming an adult and having children is an important step in everyone’s life. Choices of partner, location, career and lifestyle are all determined by the socialization pattern of the individual, which is also relevant to the given culture, time and society. My parents both grew up in a small community, where family, relationships and connections were highly valued. Hard work, learning and education alongside with achievement and personal development did have an importance, however, people “breaking out” were rare. In the 80-s, when my parents met at college, they were influenced by the movie culture, pop music and the popular themes of media. While there was no internet, they did have phone conversations and watched the lives of people in the “big city” depicted by the media as “spotless and bright”. Both my parents went to college in order to be able to break out of the small city and build a career. They wanted their children to grow up seeing the world, getting to know different people, cultures and have an easy life.

Sex roles were changing, women were becoming more outgoing, while the strict sex-appropriate behaviors were disappearing in the society. My mother was influenced by this impact of advertising and popular media, movie culture and studied economics. She became a strong, independent woman, who looks after her family, preserving her old family values she grew up with in the small town, however, she does consider herself more than a woman made to be a housewife. My father, on the other hand, has also been through the same socialization pattern and accepts my mother as independent, strong and modern who values her own achievements while respecting my father as an equal individual.
