Pages: 1

Words: 298

Essay

Social interaction is an important aspect of daily life and it becomes even more interesting when a social media is involved. The way social interaction takes place has undergone drastic transformation with the introduction of social media as an important technology. There are negative and positive implications of social media with respect to the way people interact socially.

Advantages:

Majority of the people commonly browse through social media sites including LinkedIn, MySpace, Facebook and connect with other people in the entire global community very fast. Time affordability is the most important factor that determines the effectiveness of social media in social interaction. The ability and level of interaction is thus greatly enhanced by social media is all fields of societal life. When people interact through social media, the degree of trust is heightened and thus the messages passed through social media are open. Mediated interaction has become a preference among most people (Maura, 2013).

Disadvantages:

However, the relationships of the parties engaged in social media interaction is not so deep because this means of interaction can hardly strengthen social connections in a similar way as face-to-face interaction. The interaction through social media follows a pattern of getting engaged with individuals who share common viewpoints. Diversity in viewpoints is therefore discouraged through the use of social media for social interaction (Maura, 2013). It is not feasible to verify the meaningfulness of a relationship that has been developed over social media. Most of the relationships that are attributed to social media have been associated with a lot of misery and negative actions to the vulnerable people especially the young. These include being victims of cyber-bullying and exposure to terror, tragic and disappointing to the victim.
