Introduction

The goal of this paper is to compare poverty levels of Bexar County Texas with Medina County, Texas, and the state of Texas, using the demographical data obtained from the United States Census Bureau.

Summery

The majority of the population of Texas (62.4%) is non-Hispanic which contrasts with Bexar County whose non-Hispanic population is 41.3% and Medina County’s non-Hispanic population accounts for 53.5%. Other than nationality, Bexar County and Medina County stay close to the states average in all demographical areas.

Based on information gathered from the U.S. Census Bureau (Table 1) Bexar County and Medina County, Texas have a 16.9% and 15.9% (respectfully) of their population living below poverty level. Both counties are very close to the state average of 16.8%. One reason for the high levels of poverty may be contributed to the percentage of single mothers living in these counties. In Bexar County 40.1% of the population are single mothers with children under the age of 18 still living at home, 49.8% of the population of Modena County makes up this demographic. In addition to the percentage of single mothers in these counties there is also a high rate of unemployment which contributes to the high poverty levels.
