Executive summary

It is worth noting that GameStop, being a well-known video game and software entertainment retailers is facing a sustainability problem. Sustainability is a concept that ensures a balance in society, environment, and economy for the current and future health. Most important, resource managers bear all responsibility in ensuring that future generation will effectively access the resources needed for survival as well as thrive. The below diagram illustrates the pertinent of sustainability as a central unit in the development of economy, society and environment.

It is necessary to understand that GameStop Company should embrace the above principle of sustainability so that the company’s stability can be restored (Campbell 45).

Currently, GameStop Company operates about 6200 plus stores in the whole world with inclusions of EBgames.com and a magazine titled GameStop, which is a leading magazine on Multi-platform video game. It is essential to note that the company deals in hardware, software, and game accessories. These accessories involve the future PC and generation video game systems.  For the above company to adopt a culture of sustainability throughout aspects of video games, the managers should do proper research on the ultimate goal for the company concerning its impact on the future and current community. This is because the current thorn in a video game is how to sustain the company effectively in a current environment where technology has changed on a broader perspective. This is because; of late, the transition from a costly purchase of video games to a free download using applications is already underway. It is unfortunate to note that people mostly Americans are downloading video games to Apple for instance (NASDAQ:AAPL) by iphones. The above is a tremendous challenge for any company that operates video games with an aim of making a profit, since it triggers company’s market sustainability.

As stated above, GameStop Company deals with video entertainment. The crucial issue is how to sustain the big name it has in the market of entertainment with the current dynamics in technology. According to experts, by 2020, video games will lose its market since no one will be buying videos in bricks-and-mortar board. Of late, the transition is being witnessed due to the manner in which people are adopting the technology. With the presence of a Samsung (PINK: SSNLF), and LG (PINK: LGEAF) people are able to download their own videos (Miller 21). In addition, some televisions are video- game enabled. In this case, the manufacturer embeds video game on its motherboard, which deems a disadvantage to companies like the GameStop, since people can easily get video games.

Sustainability of GameStop in the market with regard to its economic, cultural, social, legal importance and safety is controlled by technology. For the company to get a well-organized network on its falling economy, social, and cultural values, the company should connect itself to the world and adopt a perfect technological expertise in order to protect its asset by blocking the downloading ability of the people. Experts affirm that the above will be a significant step that will allow the company to withhold its sustainability in the market. It is pertinent to note that a recent business week newspaper reported the above alarming issue of video games sustainability. It narrates that, the costly software updates are numbered since almost seventy percent of the Americans are already making use of technology that will in the near future replace the above expenses of upgrading software. Stakeholders also play a vital role in the sustainability of the GameStop Company.

In simple terms, a stakeholder is either a group or individual that is interested in a given proposed action or decision. Therefore, the companies that have authority, and are affected by the outcome of the GameStop Company are an Electronics Boutique (ELBO), Ashley Sheetz and Cross platform gamers just to mention but a few. The table below shows GameStop’ stakeholders outlined by (Goodall 25)

Name (%) ranks Values($.billion)
Cross platform gamers 8.2%-higher than GameStop 24
Ashley Sheetz 6%-higher than GameStop 12
Electronics Boutique (ELBO) 12%-less than GameStop 1.4
Wal-Mart 23%-less than GameStop 0.7

According to the above list of stakeholders, it is pertinent to note that some of them are a threat to GameStop. Since Cross platform gamers and Ashley Sheetz are rated higher than GameStop, it is pertinent for the managers to evaluate their services critically to prioritize their capability. However, GameStop had intended to swap &38.15 cash, which was equal to 0.78795 shares of Electronics Boutique. By so doing, the GameStop company could get a portion of shares in Electronics Boutique and that GameStop will have control over the Electronics Boutique in terms of administration. Therefore, GameStop would increase its sustainability in the market since the managers will have increased the ability of networks. In addition, given that GameStop is rated 23% higher than Wal-Mart, it is significant for the GameStop to invest in Wal-Mart Company so that it can engulf its existence. Wal-Mart lacks a good field of networks to the entire world; again, the company faces low quality video games plus a poor technological knowhow. In addition, since GameStop is a prominent company as compared to Wal-Mart, it is pertinent for the manager to prioritize the company’s level to pin down the Wal-Mart company completely. This will make it possible for the company to take over the place of Wal-Mart and hence increase its sustainability.

Recommendations

Since technology is pertinent in the sustainability of the GameStop Company, it is critical for the company to re-establish itself technologically. Here, the company should prevent the free download of the video games by creating a non- checkable security. More so, the company should create a three-year plan that will make it powerful as compared to its stakeholders. First year, is the study year where the company should learn the tactics of its stakeholders, second year is the year of purchase. Buy the required material for both advertisement and learning aids, and lastly third year is the year to implement specified resolutions.

Possible implications of the recommendations are that, first; the recommendations if implemented will make the GameStop Company to be at par with certain competitors as the Cross platform gamers, which are far much better. Further, the above decisions will affect stakeholders in two ways, which is short-term and long-term. For short-term consequences, the stakeholders will lose the market values, which will tend to favor the GameStop. This is because as the stakeholders diminish, the sustainability of the video games under GameStop will be increasing. However, on the long-term consequences, it will be more unfortunate to the stakeholders since they will not stabilize their market trends in any way, since GameStop will have overpowered them. The above will improve the marketing environment to revolve not only around America, but also in the entire world, mostly in Africa where few individuals are using strong downloading device to get video games.
