Essay

Briefly (though quality) compared/contrasted the Medical model and the Recovery Network project services

The medical model carries the basis that physical mental disorders are linked with one another. According to this approach, an individual cannot have a mental disorder without showing some sort of physical deformity as well. The medical model relies heavily upon prescriptions to rectify problems in patients.

On the contrary, Recovery Network project services does not view physical and mental impairments as being linked with one another. In fact, the project does not view mental disorders as impairments at all. The Recovery Network system allows patients in recovery mode to help others with similar disabilities overcome their weaknesses. The purpose of this project is to spread the message of hope through exposure. The idea of the traditional medical model is to conceal one’s illness. Whereas the Recovery project encourages patients to embrace their differences, the medical model stresses the importance of ridding oneself of mental impairments. Both models have the central purpose of improving patients’ overall health.

List two (2) challenges faced by Recovery Network project. Why are they a challenge?

Employment screening and recruiting were challenges that the Recover Network project faced. Since the employment screening process included fingerprinting, many participants were unable to partake in the program. Recruiting was also a challenge because ongoing training was necessary, and many peer educators utilized public transportation that was not in close proximity to the hospital.

List two (2) outcomes from the Recovery Network project. Also explain the outcome.

Relationships between hospital staff and patients were improved as peer educators and staff members often communicated during the project. The program was also spread throughout the community. Many hospitals followed the model after seeing the success it brought about.

Article Deegan (1988)

Briefly (though quality) compared/contrasted rehabilitation services and recovery process.

As with the recovery process, rehabilitation services does not deem mental illness as a disorder that should be concealed. Instead, both services encourages patients to embrace their differences. Whereas the recovery process is more focused on beating the illness, the rehabilitation process tells participants to accept their differences as ways to exhibit pride.

Wellness and Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)

Only List one (1) specified experience of Copeland’s personal journey that stood out to you.

Copeland was diagnosed with manic depression like her siblings, yet she found a way to control her anxiety.

Briefly (though quality) described one (1) aspect/area of Copeland’s WRAP plan.

Identifying triggers is one aspect of Copeland’s WRAP plan. The action identifies things that can upset one’s inner peace. Stress from work along with pressure at home can cause mentally ill patients to revert back to their old habits. This is why it is imperative that patients write down things that can trigger an outburst, and find other ways to navigate around these problems when they arise.
